New Canaan Grocery Store Reopens As Food Emporium Becomes Acme NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Grocery shoppers will see a new name above the former Food Emporium on Elm Street in New Canaan as it reopens Friday as ACME Supermarket. The sale of 95 A&P-owned stores to Acme and Stop & Shop was approved June 20 by a bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y. The sale includes 71 stores to Acme for $246 million and 24 to Stop & Shop for $124 million. The Food Emporium's parent company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc, struggled to make money on the stores and finally declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 20. Worried Parents Descend On Fairfield Schools After Threats, Lockdown FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Frightened but relieved parents headed off to be reunited with their children late Friday morning after reports of threats to the Fairfield schools turned out to be false. Mother Karen Secrist rushed to Tomlinson Middle School, saying she became concerned when all 17 schools in the district were locked down. Fairfield Begins Dismissing Students After Lockdown From Swatting Threats FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- All 10,000 students in Fairfield were being dismissed early on Friday after spending the morning in lockdown due to fake 911 calls and threats to schools in town, officials said “All 17 public schools were placed on lockdown after what we believe is a swatting incident,” Lt. Elderly Stamford Woman Struck, Killed By Her Own Car STAMFORD, Conn. -- An 84-year-old woman died after she was struck by the open door of her 2001 Oldsmobile, which rolled down a driveway late Tuesday afternoon, Stamford Police said. Six People Displaced In Early Morning House Fire In Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. -- No one was hurt in an early morning fire Sunday at a multi-family home on Stamford's West Side, officials said. Stamford firefighters responded at 12:20 a.m. to a one-alarm fire in an occupied multiple family dwelling at 106 W. Protesters Oppose Plan To Move Historic Stamford House STAMFORD, Conn., -- A group of people will meet Saturday to protest the removal of an historic house from Bedford Street. Stamford Police Investigating Aggravated Sexual Assault At Cove Island STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford police are looking for a man who dragged a female jogger off the track at Cove Island Park at about 5:20 a.m. Friday and sexually assaulted her. The 30-year-old woman was grabbed from behind by a suspect described as an Hispanic man who told the woman he had a knife, police said.
