23 Westport Nonprofits Share $338K In Grants From Norwalk-Based Foundation NORWALK, Conn. — A total of 23 nonprofit groups in Westport received 44 grants totaling more than $338,000 from Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and its donors in the last fiscal year. Also, Westport students received nine scholarships totaling more than $25,000. The Norwalk-based Community Foundation and its donors awarded $12 million in grants in fiscal 2014. Nearly $5.5 million was awarded to 341 nonprofits in Fairfield County. In addition, 262 scholarships totaling more than $707,000 were awarded to local students. Ridgefield Luger Tucker West Named Olympic Athlete Of The Month RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Ridgefield's Tucker West was named the co-winner of the Athlete of the Month award Friday from the United States Olympic Committee. Ridgefield, a luger, shared the award with Elana Meyers Taylor, who competes in bobsled. West opened the 2014-15 World Cup season by earning two podium finishes in December, highlighted by his first world cup victory on Dec. 5 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Ice Forces Suspension Of Work On Tappan Zee Bridge TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Construction on the new Tappan Zee Bridge has slowed because of ice in the Hudson River, according to a report on LoHud.com. Tom McGuinness, construction compliance engineer for the state Thruway Authority, told LoHud.com that most work in the middle of the river has been suspended because ice has affected access. The $3.9 billion project is the largest transportation infrastructure job in the county. Mahopac Woman Charged With DWI In Yorktown YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- A Mahopac woman faces a driving while intoxicated charge after being stopped in Yorktown on Jan. 11. Christine M. Savino, 35, of Birch Drive was charged with five driving infractions after being stopped at 8:49 p.m. on Route 6 near the Taconic State Parkway.  Savino was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to keep right, failure to signal, no taillights and crossing a divider. Savino is scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Feb. 17.

Yonkers Landlord Facing Fines After Tenants Go Two Weeks Without Heat YONKERS, N.Y. -- The landlord of a Yonkers apartment building faces fines after tenants spent two weeks without heat, according to a report on News 12. Israel Roizman faces nearly $15,000 in fines after residents living at 7383 Highland Ave. reported having no heat beginning on New Year’s Eve. The problem related to faulty circulation pumps. Some tenants stayed at a hotel that was paid for by Roizman, while others stayed at the apartments and used space heaters provided by Roizman. The heat issue affected 129 low-income apartments.
