Family Displaced After Smoky Fire Starts In Dryer At Brookfield Home BROOKFIELD, Conn. — A couple with a young child were displaced from their Brookfield home after a smoky fire in the basement on Wednesday evening, according to WLAD-AM. Firefighters from across the area responded to fight the blaze in a house at 60 Candlewood Lake Road in Brookfield. The Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department's line officers were all at HQ for the monthly officers meeting and were quick to respond. Services Set For Capt. Anna Byrnes, 99, Navy Nurse From Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. — Anna M. Byrnes of Stamford, who devoted her life to serving her country as a nurse, died on Sunday, Aug. 6. She was 99. Born in Stamford on April 2, 1918, Byrnes was the eldest child of Patrick and Elizabeth Byrnes. She attended St. John Parochial School and Stamford High School. Byrnes graduated from the Norwalk Hospital School of Nursing and taught Red Cross volunteers to work as nursing assistants. Death Of 18-Year-Old Under Investigation In Danbury An investigation is under way following the death of an 18-year-old man who died two days after he was found lying unconscious in a roadway, in Danbury police said Wednesday. Several officers were dispatched on a complaint of suspicious activity in the area of Abbott Street at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, police said. World War II Airman Who Died In 1943 Returning Home To Stamford For Burial STAMFORD, Conn. — A World War II airman who died in a plane crash in Papua New Guinea in 1943 will finally return to Stamford to be laid to rest in his hometown 74 years after his death. Stamford Man, 31, Charged With Threatening To Shoot Darien Woman DARIEN, Conn. — A 31-year-old Stamford man who threatened to shoot a Darien woman was arrested on multiple charges on Sunday, Aug. 6, police said. Teen Falls Asleep Behind Wheel, Hits Tree & Mailbox, Wilton Police Say WILTON, Conn. — A 17-year-old boy who fell asleep behind the wheel of his Jeep Patriot struck a tree and a mailbox on Danbury Road on Thursday, Aug. 4, Wilton police said. Salmonella Outbreak In Connecticut Linked To Papayas From Mexico Four cases of salmonella reported in Connecticut have been linked to papayas from a farm in Carica de Campeche, Mexico, that have tested positive for five different strains of the bacteria, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gas Prices Up In Connecticut; Rank As 10th Highest In Nation Connecticut has moved up to 10th place on the list of states with the most expensive average gas prices in the nation, according to AAA Northeast. The Nutmeg State had hovered at 11th and 12th place for most of the spring and summer. As of this week, Connecticut’s average gas price increased 2 cents to $2.48 per gallon, compared to last week.
