An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. A film columnist for WAG Magazine, Sam's moviegoing expertise has been profiled in the New York Times and he was a featured guest on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.

Haverstraw Landslide Remembered: 19 Lives Lost HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. -- This month, the village of Haverstraw is commemorating the 112th anniversary of the Haverstraw Landslide. Nineteen people, including four firefighters, lost their lives in the tragedy, which occurred on Jan. 8. Clay that was being excavated for brick use under a 100-foot embankment slipped out, destroying the Rockland Street business section and homes from Liberty to Jefferson Streets. Know Anything? Reward Offered After ATVs Damage Putnam Golf Course A $1,000 reward has been offered by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office after two people drove ATVs on the Putnam County Golf Course.The golf course was able to capture video footage of the culprits riding red ATVs on the property. “We cannot allow individuals to misuse the golf course at the expense of the taxpayers," County Executive MaryEllen Odell said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office at 845-225-4300 or the Carmel Police Department at 845-628-1300.

Madeline Cecilia McHugh, Longtime Maryknoll Sister OSSINING, N.Y.-- Sister Madeline Cecilia McHugh died on Jan. 16 at the age of 97. McHugh was a Maryknoll Sister for 78 years. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on Nov. 9, 1920 to Mary (Serafin) McHugh and Matthew McHugh. She had two brothers: John and Matthew, Jr. and four sisters: Clare, Mary, Rita and Rose, all who predeceased. McHugh entered the Maryknoll Sisters Community in Maryknoll, NY from Blessed Sacrament Parish in Elizabeth, NJ on June 10, 1939. At her reception into the Congregation, she received the religious name Sister Alma Therese and made her First Profession of Vows on Jan. …

Pine Plains Superintendent Gets Contract Extension PINE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Pine Plains School District likes what they see in its superintendent. The school district announced it has given a contract extension to Superintendent Martin Handler through the 2019-2020 school year at a salary of $188,500. Paul Dennis Dolgert, 74, Mount Kisco MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Paul Dennis Dolgert, 74, died surrounded by his family and listening to his favorite jazz and classical music on Jan. 16.Dolgert was born in Philadelphia on Sept. 7, 1943, to Stanley Dolgert and Marie Dlgert (nee Dasemnek). New York To Explore Legalizing Recreational Marijuana New York is taking the next step toward legalizing recreational marijuana use. In his budget presentation Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed a study to determine the impact legalizing recreational marijuana in neighboring states like Massachusetts, Vermont and possibly New Jersey would have in New York. Cuomo also wants the state to look at the impact it would have on New York if it relaxed its marijuana laws. Westchester-Based IBM Denies Reports Of Redeploying Some Staffers IBM, which is headquartered in the Hudson Valley, is pushing back on reports it plans to reassign 30 percent of its Global Technology Services staff through attrition. The Armonk-based company said the report, which said the company hired a consulting firm to help with the strategy, was not accurate and they don't comment on speculation, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. The company, which is headquartered in Armonk, saw revenue decline .4 percent in its latest quarterly report, the 22nd consecutive quarter of year over year declines. Profits fell 4.5 percent to $2.73 billion.

Man Attempts To Extort Yorktown Resident, Police Say A 30-year-old Orange County man was arrested and charged after police say he tried to extort money from a Yorktown resident. Shea Kirschbaum of Maybrook was charged with attempted grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class A misdemeanor, after a police investigation. Kirschbaum voluntarily turned himself into police on Jan. 11. A temporary order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim. Kirschbaum was released on $500 bail and is due back in court on Feb. 8.

Cash is a seven pound Chihuahua mix who likes other small dogs and is good with kids 10 and up, the SPCA said. Cash is available for permanent foster due to a heart condition known as degenerative valve disease. This condition requires daily medication and a heart-healthy diet. $35M Barbara Walters Campus Center Breaks Ground At Sarah Lawrence Sarah Lawrence College students will soon have a new place to call home. The college in Southern Westchester broke ground on the $35 million Barbara Walters Campus Center Wednesday. The campus center is named in honor of the famed TV anchor, who donated $15 million. The center will include the Barbara Walters Gallery for exhibitions of fine art and the Barbara Walters Archives and Reading Room.
