Stamford Officials Hold Off Naming New School
STAMFORD, Conn. -- Despite a strong push to name a new Stamford elementary school after baseball legend Jackie Robinson, school officials say they'll focus now on getting the elementary school up and running in the former Sacred Heart Academy, the Stamford Advocate reports. For now, the school will be known as New School at 200 Strawberry Hill, an extension of Rogers Magnet Elementary. Redding Woman Charged With Operating Unlicensed Dog Kennel
REDDING, Conn. -- A 49-year-old Redding woman is facing charges relating to operating a dog kennel without a license after a police investigation into a report that a dog was killed at her house by her own dog, according to the Redding Pilot. Kathryn Stergue, of Redding Road, turned herself in to authorities on Aug. 4, the Redding Pilot said. Police had a warrant for her arrest on charges of cruelty to animals and operating a kennel without a license, among other charges, the Redding Pilot reported. Death In Fishkill Prison Of Cop Killer May Have Been Suicide, Officials Say
BEACON, N. Y. -- Though details are slim, officials say the 70-year-old man convicted of killing a police officer in 1975 appears to have taken his own life at Fishkill Correctional Facility, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal. The death of inmate John MacKenzie, who was convicted in the shooting death of Police Officer Matthew Giglio on Long Island is being investigated by state police and the department of corrections. Car Strikes Jogger On Route 136 In Easton
EASTON, Conn. -- A young female jogging along Route 136 in Easton was hit by a car early Monday, according to the Easton Courier. The teenager was conscious after the 10:35 a.m. accident, and taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. The road was closed for about an hour for investigation, the Easton Courier says. GREENWICH, CONN. -- A 46-year-old Greenwich woman is facing criminal tresspass and disorderly conduct charges in connection with a July 15 dispute at Greenwich Town Hall that involved yelling at a Greenwich employee, according to Greenwich Time.Greenwich Time says Saima Qamar, of Division Street, has a history of angry confrontations with local officials over new construction at her home. Spring Valley Fire Highlights Building Code Problems
SPRING VALLEY, N. Y. -- Everyone made it out safely from a fire at Division Street building Friday night, Aug. 5, but a number of building code violations were discovered by firefighters, according to News 12 Westchester.As many as 17 people live at the house, including several children. Responders found a front door that was boarded up as well as illegally built walls inside, News 12 Westchester says. Painting Materials Stolen From New House In Darien
DARIEN, CONN. -- Darien police are investigating an apparent theft of $2,000 worth of home improvement supplies from a newly constructed house on Greenleaf Avenue in Darien, according to The Darien Times. Painting materials, including 11 5-gallon buckets of paint, spackling tools and two step ladders were reported stolen on July 25. Stamford's Pacific House Gets $29K Grant To Help Homeless
STAMFORD, Conn. -- Pacific House, a Stamford-based agency that provides emergency shelter for homeless men in Fairfield County, has received a $29,000 grant from The Community Fund of Darien.The money will be used toward general operating costs, including emergency shelter and food for nearly 500 people, case management and housing services.
