Police said they were contacted just before 3:30 p.m. Friday by an employee at the Verizon Wireless Zone store at 385 Post Road E. about a suspected fraud.  The employee told officers that a female customer had attempted to purchase a cellphone upgrade with what appeared to be a fraudulent New Jersey driver's license and a fraudulent credit card, police said. Michael W. Powell Jr., 79, Retired Greenwich Police Detective GREENWICH, Conn. -- Michael W. Powell Jr., a former longtime member of the Greenwich Police Department, has died. He was 79.  Powell, a Greenwich resident, served the department from 1960 to 1987. He was a member of the National Guard from 1958 to 1964 and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.  Powell began as a patrol officer in Greenwich. He became an accident investigator and was appointed to the detective squad in 1971. In 1978, he was promoted to sergeant. He served under six police chiefs during his tenure.
